Rediscovering You: A Journey to Self and Soul
It’s easy to get lost in our world and not know who we truly are. For much of my life, I always wondered what it meant when I heard people say, “I know who I am.” To be honest, I never did. I was constantly being the person other people wanted me to be, rather than who I wanted to be.
This left me feeling depressed, lonely, and stuck. I would find myself mirroring the identities of the people I was around, but deep down, I was searching for something—some sense of belonging, of being seen—outside of myself. I didn’t realize that the answers I was looking for weren’t out there; they were within me all along.
What I’ve come to understand is that this search for identity is often the ego’s way of trying to find a label to attach to. The ego craves certainty, something tangible to hold onto, so it creates identities like “beach person,” “career-driven,” or “parent.” For a while, I thought I was a “beach person” because I loved being by the ocean. I’d spend vacations at the beach, wear beach clothes and immerse myself in that lifestyle. But over time, I realized that while I enjoyed the experience of beach towns, the nature, and the vibe, it wasn’t who I was. It was just something I enjoyed. It was part of my human experience, but not my identity.
The more I explored this, the more I began to see that the idea of identity itself is limiting. I’m not the labels I’ve worn or the roles I’ve played. In fact, I’m not even this manifestation called “Jason.” Jason is just the name I’m living under in this lifetime. What I truly am is love, oneness, and an extension of all that is.
This realization wasn’t something that happened overnight. It was a journey of unlearning, of peeling back the layers of expectations and societal conditioning. It required me to sit with myself, to ask hard questions, and to embrace moments of discomfort. I had to stop seeking external validation and start cultivating a connection with my inner self.
What I’ve discovered is that who we are isn’t something that can be defined or boxed in. Who we are is ever-evolving, limitless, and deeply interconnected with everything around us. We’re not the jobs we hold, the places we visit, or the clothes we wear. We’re not even the stories we’ve been told about ourselves. At our core, we’re pure being—an expression of love and unity, here to experience, grow, and remember our essence.
As you get to know more of your human self, it opens the door to knowing more of your soul self. The two are deeply connected, and by exploring your human experiences, you gain insights into your deeper, spiritual essence. It’s through embracing your imperfections, your emotions, and your authentic desires that you begin to align with your soul. Your human journey becomes a pathway to rediscovering the infinite and eternal nature of who you are.
So, if you’re feeling lost or unsure of who you are, know this: You’re not alone. It’s okay to not have all the answers. Let go of the need to define yourself and instead, turn inward. Allow yourself to feel, to experience, and to simply be. In doing so, you may discover that you’re so much more than you ever imagined.
Here are some questions to ponder as you reflect on your own journey:
Who am I when no one else is around to influence me?
What labels have I attached to myself, and do they truly resonate with my essence?
Am I seeking validation or a sense of identity from external sources?
What activities or experiences bring me a sense of joy and peace, beyond any labels or expectations?
How can I connect more deeply with my inner self?
Take your time with these questions. There are no right or wrong answers, only opportunities to explore and rediscover the beautiful truth of who you are.
